A fire requires two different items: fuel and ignition. The fuel is kindling, wood, dry moss, etc. The ignition is the harder part. The simple way out is a lighter, but even those can be hard to start a fire. That is why you should always bring at least two different methods of fire starting, to allow different ways of going about the fire starting. Fires are always a necessity on camp-outs, as they can boil water for drinking, cook meat and other foods, and they offer a nice meeting place at night, adding to the vibe of the camp-out.
