These essentials to survival were introduced several years ago by the Mountaineers. In recent years, additions such as emergency shelter, water, and signaling devices have been added by various authors. Whatever is considered as essential does not take the place of standard equipment that might be required on a wilderness outing such as a tent, sleeping bag, food, stove, etc. These essentials should be carried for regular use as well as unexpected emergencies. The following list is also provided in a priority sequence for most wilderness settings.
