Backpacking Checklist

  • Pack, with frame (internal or external) and waistbelt
  • Sleeping bag (stuffable polyfil or down, good to 20 degrees)
  • Large garbage bag or waterproof pack cover
  • Sleeping Pad
  • Tent and groundsheet (or tarps for shelter), 1 for each 2 scouts
  • Underwear
  • Socks/undersocks (wool or synthetic blend)
  • Long & short sleeve shirts
  • Long pants or tights
  • Shorts
  • Sweater or Fleece coat or vest
  • Jacket (waterproof/breathable if possible)
  • Hats (2) (1 knit or fleece, 1 baseball type)
  • Boots (lug soled and high enough for ankle support/protection, waterproofed)
  • Lightweight camp shoes, aquasocks, or Tevas
  • Rain gear or poncho
  • Mug or bowl & spoon
  • Cookset or pots, as needed
  • Stove & Fuel (test before you go), 1 for each 2 scouts
  • Water bottle and spare (at least 1 quart per scout)
  • Water filter/treatment
  • Personal Food or trail snacks/power bars
  • Scrubber, small plastic garbage bag, strainer or cheesecloth for dishwater
  • Personal First Aid Kit
  • Personal Medical Items
  • Compass
  • Map of the area
  • Pocket Knife (folding)
  • Waterproof matches in container or lighters (2)
  • Firestarter or candle
  • Lightweight nylon rope (at least 50 ft.)
  • Small flashlight with extra batteries and bulb
  • Trowel
  • Toilet paper in Ziploc bag, extra Ziploc bags
  • Small towel or washcloth
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste & floss
  • Biodegradable liquid soap
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
